Walk 1: Shugborough Estate Walk

A short and inspirational walk.

1 mile - 20 mins

Turn right out of Canalside Farm gate, cross over the road and walk for a few meters until you cross over the canal. Turn down left to join the towpath of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Go right on the tow path and then over the beautiful junction bridge that crosses the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.

Continue on for 200 yards until you meet the busy Georgian canal lock (c.1777), then dip down under the footbridge ahead.

Turn right and through the wall to meet the footpath. Turn left to go over the historic Essex Bridge (c.1550) and on to the magnificent Shugborough Estate. You can pay to go into the National Trust attractions at its office along on the bridleway as you walk across the park. For the return route simply retrace your steps.

Note: This route is suitable for wheelchairs, however it would be easier to start by going left out of our Farm, under the railway bridge and then turn immediate right. Walk along the bridleway to the Clifford Arms in the centre of Great Haywood village and on to Trent Lane which will lead you down to Essex Bridge as described above.
