We are a family run farm that has been growing its own produce for the past 36 years.
It was back in 1983 that we bought this small holding in Great Haywood and planted our first strawberries that spring. From the beginning we have provided soft summer fruits, kitchen vegetables and garden plants directly to businesses across the region, and also to the local community from our Farm Shop – one of Staffordshire’s first!
We have continued to grow and develop our offering to customers over the years, and have since: extended our Farm Shop (twice!); built a new Café alongside the historic Trent and Mersey Canal; developed our pick your own (PYO) experience to include Halloween pumpkins; established a seasonal Plant Centre in our main glasshouse; and created a programme of inspirational, educational events for all the family to enjoy.

Plant Manager &
Head of Business
This is a hands-on role that will be challenging but full of possibility – the successful candidate will be navigating the café & the coffee hut through the easing of restrictions in 2021, launching a premium dine-in service and continuing to build our successful ‘quick pick’ coffee hut offer. The Hospitality Manager will be directly involved in recruiting, inducting, coaching and overseeing the training of future new team members, and ensuring throughout that their department is delivering on its KPI’s.
The purpose of the role:
To lead and drive Canalside Farm’s hospitality offer. Initially the Manager will navigate the easing of restrictions and then settle on a profitable operating rhythm that harnesses a dual model of indoor premium hospitality and outdoor ‘quick pick’ convenience.
“Be the highlight” - The Manager must ensure a team culture of positivity, embrace a purpose of satisfying the customer, and deliver on the business’s strategy to be a premium destination.
Ultimately responsible for setting the standards for your department, delivering strategic objectives, allocating resource where required, coaching, overseeing training, people management & motivation, organising the rota, assistance with hiring, starter inductions, performance reviews, and performance management.
Be the highlight for the customer by providing exceptional customer service and getting your team to do the same through positivity, knowledgeable interactions, and completing requests all whilst being, quick & efficient.
Maintenance of Food Safety Standards
Ultimately responsible for ensuring the production of food & drinks is completed to the Business’s high food safety standards, working within the established processes, completing our checklists, ensuring the department is kept clean, organised, and well maintained.
Ultimately responsible for ensuring the department is profitable by managing margins through staffing appropriately, buying appropriately (whilst maintaining stock levels), ensuring efficiencies, accurately costing, minimising waste, and setting prices.
The whole team wins when it’s together, department managers must work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the success of their own department, and the success of other departments – this requires clear and ongoing communication and establishing a mutual rhythm of cooperation.
Remaining Current & Engaging the Customer
Must be aware of industry trends, generate new ideas and initiatives for marketing opportunities, menu setting, and be open to suggestions.
The role will be full time (5 days per week), at least one of those days will be a weekend day. Normal opening hours for both the Cafe & the Coffee Hut will be 9am-5pm. There are occasional evening events but these are currently ad hoc.
