THE TOLKIEN TRAIL
Walk in the footsteps of world famous author J.R.R. Tolkien!
J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, stayed with his wife Edith in a cottage in Great Haywood (1916-17) whilst posted to army camps on Cannock Chase. It was during this period, when he returned home to recuperate after the Battle of the Somme, that he wrote his first mythological stories. His wanderings in the county’s countryside inspired his creativity and later led to immortalisation in what we now know as Middle-Earth!
GREAT HAYWOOD WALK
Enjoy a circular walk (part of the Tolkien Trail) which explores Brocton Camp and Great Haywood, passing through Brocton Coppice, Sherbrook Valley, the Punch Bowl and Shugborough Estate. Find out more about this walk which was created as part of the Staffordshire Tolkien Trail.
